Resumen

This paper explores how the Spanish playwright José Padilla interweaves documentary and verbatim theatre practices, real-life referents and metatheatrical devices in order to foreground the realities of bullying and cyberbullying in his plays Papel (2018) and Golfa (2022). Through polyvocality, the use of real names and events, and self-referential metatheatrical techniques, Padilla destabilizes theatrical boundaries, in turn invoking an active spectatorship and creating a space conducive to productive dialogue and collaboration that considers the notions of oppression, witnessing, and the individual and ethical responsibilities of the audience in fostering positive action in their own lives. Padilla consciously crafts his works around the real-life experiences of teenagers in Spain, a demographic that he considers to be frequently ignored and invisibilized both in public space and on stage in canonical theatre practices. This paper thereby examines how Padilla vindicates the experiences and perspectives of teenagers and significantly broadens the scope of theatre to reach young audiences both within Spain and abroad. By taking as a point of departure the thematic frameworks of bullying and cyberbullying and giving voice to the previously voiceless teenage populations, Padilla reframes the space of the stage as an accessible and empowering site for a growing ethical consciousness and social change.
